Using Milton Speckels own words from: The complete guide to MicroMounts..published in 1965 by Gembooks, Mentone,CA. "Micromounts vary in size from specimens so small they will fit on the point of a pin, to pieces about three-quarters of an inch square." In recent times it is now acceptable to include small miniatures size specimens that will not survive further trimming without great damage to most of the mineral's crystals. You will require a hand lens of 5x or 15x power for viewing to start with if you do not have a microscope. A good compound or stereo microscope of up to 40x powers is a good start.

Speckels says: "Microminerals offer exquisite color, unusual associations, perfection of crystals, rarity of species and an enjoyment of mineral beauty seldom seen in larger specimens." I could not agree more.

Be sure to get Quintin Wight's "The complete book of Micromounting" published in 1993 by the Mineralogical Record of Tucson, AZ. It is a wealth of information if not the "Bible" of micromineral collectors today.
